52-year-old suspect in homeless teen’s death arrested by Boulder police

Police in Boulder have made an arrest in the murder of homeless teenager Zaria Hardee, whose body was found wrapped and strapped to a bike trailer more than six months ago. The suspect, James “Jimmy” West, 52, also homeless, has been charged with first-degree murder. Hardee died of blunt force trauma to the head and asphyxia. The arrest came after a lengthy investigation and a history of criminal charges against West. Hardee’s mother expressed relief at the arrest, calling her daughter a “fragile bomb.” Details of Hardee’s last days revealed troubling circumstances, with her boyfriend reportedly confessing to selling her to West. Hardee was last seen alive on July 10, 2024, and her body was discovered on July 14. The case has shed light on the challenges faced by homeless youth in Boulder, and officials have highlighted the need for better societal support. West’s court appearance is scheduled for Friday, where he will face charges related to the murder of Zaria Hardee. Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty acknowledged the broader issues of mental health, addiction, and homelessness that contribute to such tragedies. The community continues to mourn the loss of Hardee and seek justice for her senseless death.
