The details of the midair collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and passenger jet above the Potomac River

In a tragic accident near Washington, D.C., a passenger jet and a Black Hawk helicopter collided midair on Wednesday, crashing into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport. The passenger jet, American Eagle Flight No. 5342, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the helicopter had three soldiers on board. At least 18 bodies were recovered from the river, and no survivors have been found so far.

The helicopter, on a training flight, belonged to B Company, 12th Aviation Battalion out of Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The deadly collision occurred as the plane was approaching the runway at Reagan National Airport after taking off from Wichita, Kansas. President Trump expressed his condolences, noting the incredible work of first responders, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Kansas Senator Roger Marshall also reacted to the tragedy.

This marks the first major U.S. commercial crash in almost 16 years since the 2009 Continental Airlines crash in Buffalo, New York. The last major American Airlines crash occurred in 2001 near John F. Kennedy International Airport. Investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing, and emergency response units are conducting search and rescue operations in the Potomac River. The incident has deeply saddened the affected communities, with Alexandria, Virginia, Mayor Alyia Gaskins expressing prayers for those impacted by the tragedy.
