Philadelphia musicians Karen Slack, soprano vocalist, and Michelle Cann, pianist and Curtis Institute of Music professor, are heading to the 2025 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles for their collaborative album “Beyond the Years.” The album, nominated for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, highlights the works of Florence Price, a groundbreaking Black composer whose contributions were overlooked in her lifetime due to racial and gender barriers.
Price, the first Black woman to have her compositions performed by a major U.S. symphony orchestra, inspired Cann and Slack to select 19 of her compositions for voice and piano from over 145 original manuscripts. The album was created in partnership with ONEcomposer, an organization dedicated to amplifying underrepresented musical voices.
Cann, who worked on a Grammy-winning album featuring Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement, is excited about her first individual Grammy nomination and hopes to raise awareness and donations for music professionals affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles through the Academy’s MusiCares program.
The musicians express pride in representing Philadelphia at the Grammy Awards and see the nomination as validation of Price’s musical brilliance. ONEComposer plans to make the scores for “Beyond the Years” available to the public this spring, furthering Price’s legacy to a wider audience. The 2025 Grammy Awards will air on CBS.
