New National Women’s Soccer League team selects Denver as their home base

Denver will soon be home to a women’s professional soccer team, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced. Plans are in place to build a new soccer stadium for the Denver NWSL team, making it the first women’s professional sports team in a major national league to be based in Denver.

Mayor Mike Johnston expressed excitement about this new team, highlighting the city’s talented players and the historic moment of having its own professional women’s team. The NWSL had been in negotiations with a group from Denver for expansion, and the formal announcement was made recently.

The NWSL commissioner, Jessica Berman, discussed the selection of Denver as the ideal city for the 16th team due to its passionate sports culture and vibrant fan base. The team will bring a purpose-built stadium and training facility, setting new standards for excellence in women’s soccer.

Part of the reason Denver was chosen was the presence of For Denver FC, a grassroots movement for a women’s professional team in Colorado. The Denver NWSL team will host a rally for supporters and a press conference with Gov. Polis and Mayor Johnston to celebrate the announcement. Tickets for the 2026 season are already available on the Denver NWSL website.

Overall, the addition of the Denver NWSL team reflects the league’s expansion and commitment to providing top-tier sports experiences for players and fans alike.
