New Orleans mourns the loss of Pableaux Johnson, a beloved food writer, photographer, and cook, who passed away at the age of 59. Known for spreading the gospel of community through his Monday night dinners of red beans and rice, Johnson was a joyful fixture in the city since moving there in 2001. His meals brought together a diverse group of guests, from local musicians to famous chefs, creating a bridge between cultures in New Orleans.

In addition to his culinary talents, Johnson was also a documentary photographer, capturing the city’s unique Mardi Gras traditions and the culture of Black masking Indians. His work was respected by the community, and he was known to show up at funerals with enlarged portraits of the deceased.

Throughout his life, Johnson made countless friends and connections, earning the title of Gumbo Claus for his holiday gumbo deliveries and delighting people with his intimate portrait photography. His impact on the city’s cultural community was immeasurable, and he will be remembered for his authentic connection to New Orleans.

Johnson’s legacy lives on through his four books, including a guidebook to eating in New Orleans, and his Red Beans Roadshow, where he partnered with chefs across the country to recreate his famous Monday night dinners. He is survived by his sisters, half brother, stepsiblings, and the countless friends he made over the years, each remembering Johnson’s warm spirit and generous nature.
