Trump’s Justice Department dismisses staff who were part of criminal probe against President

The US Justice Department has fired more than a dozen employees who worked on criminal prosecutions of President Donald Trump, in a move seen as retribution against those involved in investigations against the former president. The firings, which targeted career prosecutors who worked on special counsel Jack Smith’s team, signal the administration’s willingness to take action in favor of Trump’s personal interests.

Acting Attorney General James McHenry terminated the employment of these officials, stating that he does not trust them to faithfully implement the president’s agenda. This action is part of the administration’s mission to end the perceived weaponization of government.

It is not clear which prosecutors were affected by the order, or how many remain with the department as Trump took office last week. The move comes after Trump issued pardons and commutations for over 1,500 supporters charged in the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, including some convicted of violent attacks on police.

Trump has long sought to exert control over the Justice Department, replacing key officials with loyalists. Pam Bondi, Trump’s pick for attorney general, has not ruled out potential investigations into Trump adversaries. Special counsel Jack Smith resigned earlier this month after submitting reports on investigations into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and hoarding of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate, both of which were ultimately dropped following Trump’s reelection.
