Reports indicate that multiple senior officials at leading U.S. aid agency have been placed on leave

At least 56 senior officials at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) have been placed on administrative leave amid an investigation into allegations that they were trying to thwart President Trump’s orders, according to reports from Politico and confirmed by current and former officials. This move comes after President Trump issued an executive order last week that placed a 90-day pause on most U.S. foreign assistance disbursed through the State Department.

As a result of this funding freeze, thousands of U.S.-funded programs around the world have stopped work or are preparing to, leading to layoffs of hundreds of employees. The new acting administrator at USAID, Jason Gray, identified actions within the agency that appeared to be defying the President’s orders and has placed several employees on leave pending further investigation.

The senior agency officials who were put on leave had served in multiple administrations, including the Trump administration, and were working to help aid organizations cope with the funding freeze before their removal. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has exempted emergency food programs and military aid to Israel and Egypt from the freeze, and the Trump administration plans to review all foreign assistance programs to determine their value to U.S. interests.

The move to place these officials on leave highlights the tensions and challenges facing aid and development agencies in the current political climate, with a focus on reevaluating foreign aid and ensuring it aligns with American interests.
