Head of UNRWA cautions against looming ban on Israel, citing potential disaster | News on Israel-Palestine conflict

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini has warned that Israel’s impending ban on the organization would have devastating consequences, crippling humanitarian efforts in Gaza and undermining the Israel-Hamas ceasefire. Lazzarini stated that the ban would heighten instability and deepen despair in the occupied Palestinian territory, ultimately eroding trust in the international community and jeopardizing peace and security prospects. The United States, a key ally of Israel, supported the decision to shut down UNRWA, despite warnings from experts and UN officials about the catastrophic impact this would have.

UNRWA plays a crucial role in delivering aid to Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, as well as in managing schools-turned-shelters for displaced civilians. Israel has announced plans to cut all contact with UNRWA, ban Israeli officials from working with the agency, and close its offices in areas under Israeli control. This move comes as part of efforts to implement the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, which has seen the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

The ceasefire has allowed thousands of displaced Palestinians to return home, only to find their houses destroyed. The rebuilding process has been challenging, with many people forced to start from scratch. More than 47,000 people have been killed and over 111,000 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 2023. The ban on UNRWA is likely to exacerbate an already dire humanitarian situation in the region, further complicating efforts to rebuild and recover from the conflict.
