Author and Illustrator Dav Pilkey recently visited Boy’s Prep in the Bronx and shared with students that he created Dog Man back in second grade. Despite his learning disabilities such as ADHD and dyslexia, the kids were inspired to see someone with similar struggles achieve such success.
The popular Dog Man series has consistently been the bestselling children’s book each year. The story follows a man and his dog involved in an accident where the dog’s head is sewn onto the man’s body, creating Dog Man. Pilkey infuses meaning into the books, with titles inspired by classics like “A Tale of Two Kitties.”
The series has 13 books, with a new film adaptation being released soon. Comedian Pete Davidson stars as the villain, Petey the Cat, in the film. Director Peter Hastings was drawn to Pilkey’s humorous style in creating the movie.
Despite having others adapt his characters for the screen, Pilkey is grateful for the opportunity and hopes that kids appreciate the work he puts into his books. He does not worry about running out of ideas, but instead wishes for more time to bring his ideas to life through writing and illustration.
The film adaptation of Dog Man is set to be an exciting adventure for fans of the series, offering a fresh take on the beloved characters created by Dav Pilkey.
