As Israeli Troop Withdrawal Deadline Nears, Violence Escalates in Lebanon: Live Updates

In southern Lebanon, at least 15 people were killed and over 80 were injured by Israeli forces as the 60-day deadline for Hezbollah and Israel to withdraw from the area expired. The agreement signed in November aimed to secure the region with the presence of the Lebanese Army and U.N. peacekeepers. However, Israeli forces remained in parts of southern Lebanon, violating the cease-fire agreement, which raised fears of a sustained Israeli occupation and potential renewed hostilities with Hezbollah.

Lebanese civilians attempted to return to their villages along the border on Sunday morning, despite Israeli warnings against it. The Lebanese Army accompanied some civilians to ensure their safety, but clashes still occurred. The situation marked one of the deadliest days in Lebanon since the cease-fire began in November.

Israeli officials expressed concerns about Hezbollah’s continued presence in southern Lebanon. On the other hand, Hezbollah officials stated their commitment to upholding the truce terms. The continued occupation by Israel poses a critical test for Lebanon’s new leadership as they strive to assert political control and build a functioning state.

Both Israel and Hezbollah have shifted responsibility for responding to the situation to the Lebanese government. Hezbollah’s weakened position due to the prolonged conflict, alongside recent political shifts in Lebanon, presents an uncertain future for the region. The continued Israeli occupation could reinvigorate Hezbollah’s support base as they seek a protector against Israeli forces. Middle East experts caution against underestimating Hezbollah’s political weight despite recent setbacks.
