Photos document the rise to prominence of Enrique Tarrio as leader of the Proud Boys

Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, was pardoned by President Donald Trump along with more than 1,500 other individuals charged with crimes related to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Tarrio had been sentenced to 22 years for seditious conspiracy but was released from prison after Trump’s pardon. Following his release, Tarrio spoke to the media outside the D.C. Central Detention Facility in Washington, D.C.

Tarrio had been convicted of seditious conspiracy along with three other members of the Proud Boys in connection with the Capitol attack. Before his conviction, Tarrio had been active in leading the Proud Boys in various rallies and protests, including ones in support of President Trump and against the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Tarrio’s involvement in far-right groups had sparked controversy and led to clashes with counter-protesters and anti-fascist groups. His release from prison following Trump’s pardon reignited debates over accountability for those involved in the Capitol attack and raised concerns about the implications of mass pardons on the justice system.

Despite his release, Tarrio’s actions and involvement with the Proud Boys continue to be a subject of scrutiny and debate within the broader context of political polarization and extremism in the United States.
