Otay Mountain in California experiences rapid fire growth: View map to see extent

A new fire, named the Border 2 Fire, ignited near San Diego in Southern California on Thursday, adding to weeks of blazes in the region. The fire started in the Otay Mountain Wilderness Area, about 30 miles southeast of the city and close to the U.S.-Mexico border. By 7:15 p.m. PT, the fire had already burned 566 acres and was at 0% containment, spreading at a dangerous rate. While no evacuations had been ordered, there was a threat to critical communication infrastructure in the area. The Chula Vista Fire Department assured that the fire did not pose a threat to the city. The Border 2 Fire was one of two fires that broke out near San Diego that day, with the Gillman Fire leading to temporary evacuations in La Jolla. Thankfully, the forward progress of the Gillman Fire was halted at 3 acres. Residents were encouraged to sign up for weather and fire alerts to stay informed about the ongoing wildfire situation in the region.
