New Signage to Improve Foot Traffic Flow During BRT Construction in Colfax

Denver Business Owners Feel Impact of Colfax Transit Construction

DENVER, Colo. — Business owners along Colfax Avenue are expressing concerns over a notable decline in foot traffic due to ongoing construction for the Colfax Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. This $280 million initiative, which began in October after a decade-long planning process, aims to enhance public transportation by creating a dedicated transit lane from Denver’s Union Station to I-225.

The project, now in full swing, has created barriers that deter pedestrians from accessing local businesses. Josh Bailey, a tattoo artist at Lifetime Tattoo adjacent to Voodoo Donuts, noted the dramatic drop in walk-in customers, particularly those who would stop by after enjoying a donut. "With all the fences, many assume we’re closed," he explained.

Frank Locantore, executive director of the Colfax Avenue Business Improvement District, acknowledged the expansion of construction zones has exacerbated the issues for nearby establishments. He mentioned that the project is ahead of schedule but indicated that unforeseen factors often necessitate changes in the construction plan.

In a bid to assist struggling businesses, Locantore highlighted that new signage will soon be installed to inform pedestrians that businesses remain open and to guide customer foot traffic. Additionally, the Denver Economic Development and Opportunity division is working on federal grants aimed at offsetting financial losses for local shops, with applications set to open in March.

Despite the challenges, Bailey remains hopeful, emphasizing the strong community bond shared among local businesses, stating, "We tough it up." The community continues to rally as they navigate the impacts of this ambitious transit project.
