Mayor of Newark Alleges ICE Detained American Citizens in Immigration Raid

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka criticized U.S. immigration agents for rounding up both undocumented migrants and American citizens in a raid at a business establishment in Newark, New Jersey. The raid took place shortly after President Donald Trump issued executive orders aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration. Baraka condemned the lack of warrant and violation of the Fourth Amendment during the operation. The incident sparked outrage from other local officials including Rep. LaMonica McIver, who demanded answers from the Department of Homeland Security.

The Trump administration has been implementing strict immigration policies, including allowing ICE raids in houses of worship and targeting individuals for deportation. However, studies have shown that immigrants do not commit crimes at a higher rate than native-born Americans. Immigrant advocacy groups like Make the Road NJ have criticized ICE for violating civil rights and harming communities with aggressive enforcement actions.

New Jersey has been a battleground for immigration policies, with the state fighting against federal directives that limit cooperation with immigration authorities. Governor Phil Murphy signed a law in 2021 barring the state from entering into contracts with ICE to hold federal immigrant detainees. Following the law’s implementation, several counties ended their contracts with ICE. The state has also seen private prison companies proposing to expand detention facilities despite ongoing efforts to protect immigrant communities.
