Wheat Ridge Police Capture Suspects in Distracting Theft Using Enhanced Surveillance
Wheat Ridge, CO – Increasing theft incidents across the metro area have prompted local stores to adopt more vigilant surveillance measures, leading to swift arrests in an alarming case involving an elderly victim. According to Kevin McClanahan, Division Assistant Asset Protection Manager for King Soopers/City Market, the rise in retail theft has driven security teams to adopt innovative strategies to prevent crimes.
The recent incident began inside a Wheat Ridge store, where security cameras documented a duo executing a calculated distraction theft. One suspect engaged an 84-year-old woman in conversation, while the other stealthily used his shirt to cover her purse and retrieve her wallet. Wheat Ridge Police spokesperson Alex Rose emphasized the store’s proactive security efforts, noting that officers received real-time updates from the security team during the incident.
As the suspects attempted their getaway, surveillance cameras continued to track their movements outside the store. With detailed vehicle descriptions and license plate information relayed to law enforcement, police intercepted the suspects—identified as Mauricio Torres-Garcia and Luis Sebastian Morales-Garcia—just a block away. The victim was able to confirm one of the suspects at the scene, with police subsequently discovering seven of her credit cards in their possession.
"This incident serves as a stark warning to criminals and a reminder to the community," Rose stated, urging shoppers to maintain awareness of their surroundings, especially in crowded locations. Although shoplifting is commonly classified as a misdemeanor, due to the victim’s age, the suspects now face felony charges for theft against an at-risk adult. Such proactive measures and community vigilance are crucial in combatting the rise of retail thefts in the area.
