AI system unsuccessful in identifying firearm

An artificial intelligence-powered weapon detection software called Omnilert installed at Antioch High School in Nashville failed to detect the firearm used in a shooting that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old student. The software did not activate because of the shooter’s location and the position of the weapon but did trigger when armed police officers entered the school. The shooting, carried out by a student named Solomon Henderson, resulted in the death of Josselin Corea Escalante and left a 17-year-old student wounded before the shooter turned the gun on himself.

The school district invested over $1 million in the software after school board approval in February 2023. Despite having safety measures in place such as school resource officers, a secure entrance, and the weapon-detection software, the incident still occurred. The school staff responded quickly to the shooting, and the district is committed to understanding how and why it happened to prevent future tragedies. Antioch High School will be closed for the week, while other district schools will remain open with counselors available for support. The Metro Nashville Police Department is still investigating the shooting.

Director Adrienne Battle emphasized the importance of maintaining the safety of students while acknowledging that schools have historically been safe places for learning and growth. The focus is on preventing similar incidents in the future and ensuring that positive experiences continue to shape students’ educational journey.
