Democratic state senators in Colorado came together on the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade to advance a bill affirming the state’s commitment to reproductive rights. The bill, SJR25-004, would also designate Jan. 22 as “Reproductive Rights and Justice Day.” Senators Cutter and Michaelson Jenet expressed their support for the bill, stressing the importance of reproductive justice.
Michaelson Jenet shared a personal story highlighting the significance of reproductive rights. She recounted a time when she needed an abortion to save her life, emphasizing the importance of access to abortion in such situations. The bill passed on a party-line vote of 21-11, with no Republicans speaking on the resolution.
Last November, Colorado voters enshrined the right to an abortion in the state Constitution, following a successful 2022 bill to place the right to an abortion into state statutes. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, making the protection of reproductive rights even more crucial.
On the same day, the 50th anniversary of the opening of Boulder Abortion Clinic was celebrated, with founder Dr. Warren Hern reaffirming the clinic’s commitment to women’s bodily autonomy. Dr. Hern, 86, expressed his dedication to ensuring the continuation of the clinic and the fight for reproductive rights.
The resolution passed serves as a testament to the ongoing fight for reproductive justice in Colorado and honors the legacy of Roe v. Wade while looking towards a future of true bodily autonomy for all individuals.
