Map showing location of 5.7-Magnitude Earthquake in the Philippines

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck in the Philippines on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 7:39 a.m. Philippine time, about 4 miles southeast of Liloan. Seismologists are reviewing data and may revise the reported magnitude. Aftershocks, smaller earthquakes that follow a larger one, are expected in the region. These aftershocks can occur days, weeks, or even years after the initial earthquake and may be of equal or larger magnitude. The U.S.G.S. is monitoring aftershock data and will update the shake-severity map accordingly. The map shows areas with a shake intensity of 4 or greater, defined by the U.S.G.S. as “light,” although the earthquake may be felt outside these areas. The aftershocks data is as of Wednesday, January 22 at 11:40 p.m. Eastern time, while the shake data is as of January 22 at 7:12 p.m. Eastern time. The earthquake serves as a reminder of the seismic activity in the region and the importance of being prepared for natural disasters.
