Laguna Fire ignites in proximity to California State University campus: View map for location.

A new brushfire, named the Laguna Fire, broke out north of Los Angeles near California State University’s Channel Islands campus. The fire initially was estimated at 3 acres but grew to 50 acres before firefighters could contain it. Evacuation orders were issued but later downgraded to warnings. This fire followed the Hughes Fire, which burned over 10,000 acres and caused widespread evacuations.

The region has been plagued by wildfires since Jan. 7, with the Palisades and Eaton Fires destroying thousands of homes and causing at least 28 deaths. Los Angeles and Ventura Counties are under a red flag warning due to critical fire conditions. The cause of the Laguna and Hughes fires is under investigation.

Other fires being tracked by Cal Fire include the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles County, the Eaton Fire in Los Angeles County, the Hughes Fire in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, the Sepulveda Fire in Los Angeles County, and the Clay Fire in Riverside County. Strong winds and low humidity have contributed to fire growth, leading to dangerous conditions. Evacuations have been ordered, and residents are urged to follow evacuation orders. The area is forecasted to remain under a red flag warning until Friday morning, with a wind advisory in effect until Thursday afternoon.
