French Crypto Entrepreneur and His Wife Released After Being Kidnapped

David Balland, the founder of French cryptocurrency company Ledger, and his wife were kidnapped earlier this week in Vierzon, France. They were separated, held for ransom, and the kidnappers demanded a large sum in cryptocurrency. The local police, notified by the company, initiated an investigation involving over 230 officers who successfully located the couple. Mr. Balland was found in Châteauroux, while his wife was located in Étampes and both were freed unharmed. However, Mr. Balland had a mutilated finger due to the kidnappers’ pressure tactics.

An official said that part of the ransom was paid during negotiations, but most of it was tracked, frozen, and seized by law enforcement. Ten suspects, including nine men and one woman with previous criminal records, were taken into custody for questioning about the kidnapping. The case is being investigated as kidnapping, torture, and armed extortion, with potential life imprisonment.

Ledger, a company valued at over $1 billion, has welcomed the safe return of its founder and his wife. The company has over 700 employees worldwide and has sold millions of units. The incident has caused concern in the cryptocurrency community, as it follows a similar case involving a cryptocurrency influencer in Dubai. However, investigators have not found any direct connections between the two incidents.

This high-profile kidnapping and ransom case in France highlights the dangers faced by individuals involved in the cryptocurrency industry. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and the perpetrators could face severe legal consequences.
