Falling for a pristine modernist house, and diving into renovations

Emlen Fischer and Ayla Christman, a tech executive and interiors photographer, purchased a 1966 modernist home in Palo Alto, designed by architect Aaron Green, for about $2.7 million in October 2019. The 1,590-square-foot house was essentially a time capsule, with original finishes and fixtures still intact.

Despite the outdated systems and occasional ant problem, Fischer and Christman were drawn to the unique design and affordable price for Palo Alto. They embarked on a renovation project with architect Neal Schwartz to modernize the home while preserving Green’s original intent.

The renovation included an overhaul of the main house, an addition, and two new outbuildings, bringing the total size to 3,100 square feet. Interior designer Sarah Sherman Samuel was brought in to personalize the space with vibrant colors, prints, and patterns.

The landscape was also redesigned by Boxleaf Design to create a park-like feel with stone pathways, tall grasses, and trees. Construction began in July 2021 and was completed in September 2023, at a total cost of about $1,000 per square foot.

Fischer and Christman are thrilled with the results of the project, despite the time and financial investment. They feel fortunate to have created a unique and memorable space for their family.
