D.C. Police Officers Convicted of Murder and Obstruction Pardoned by President Trump

President Donald Trump pardoned two Washington, D.C. police officers convicted in the death of Karon Hylton-Brown, who was riding a moped without a helmet when he ignored instructions to stop. Officer Terence D. Sutton chased Hylton-Brown for more than 10 blocks, resulting in Hylton-Brown being struck by another car and eventually dying. Sutton and fellow officer Andrew Zabavsky then covered up Sutton’s actions by turning off their body cameras, allowing the other driver to leave, and failing to start an investigation. Sutton was convicted of second-degree murder and other charges and was sentenced to 5 and a half years in prison, while Zabavsky was convicted of other charges and received a four-year prison sentence.

The DC police union and the officers’ lawyers had sought clemency from the Trump administration. Trump’s pardon came while both officers were appealing their cases and were not behind bars. Hylton-Brown’s mother had urged Trump not to pardon the officers.

In response to the pardon, Sutton’s lawyer expressed gratitude that the prosecution had ended, while Zabavsky’s lawyer could not be reached for comment. The D.C. Circuit, a federal appeals court, was mentioned as part of Sutton’s lawyer’s statements.
