Conservative Americans use DEI as a way to avoid integration: Racism in disguise

Conservative and far-right groups are escalating their attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the latest battle against so-called “woke culture.” Recent incidents, such as the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse and climate change-driven fires in Southern California, have been blamed on DEI practices by GOP officials and public figures.
Major corporations and nonprofits, including Walmart, McDonald’s, and Amazon, are now retreating from DEI efforts following pressure from opponents. President Donald Trump has taken steps to dismantle the federal government’s diversity and inclusion infrastructure, putting DEI staff on paid leave with plans for layoffs.
The opposition to DEI is rooted in a desire to maintain a “white man’s country” and preserve systems that benefit white men. Efforts against affirmative action, critical race theory, and DEI programs are part of a larger movement to return the US to a state of racial segregation.
Opponents like Ward Connerly and Edward Blum argue for color-blind policies, claiming that race-conscious initiatives amount to discrimination. However, these efforts ignore the entrenched racism, misogyny, and inequality in American society, further marginalizing communities of color.
Critics of Connerly and Blum’s work argue that their focus on dismantling affirmative action and DEI programs will only reinforce exclusion and segregation in education and employment. The impact of these efforts is already evident in reduced admissions for Black and Latinx students in universities and medical schools.
Ultimately, the push against DEI programs reflects a resistance to confronting systemic racism and a preference for maintaining a status quo that advantages white Americans, particularly affluent white men. The focus on color-blind policies and meritocracy ignores the inherent inequalities in American society and perpetuates racial disparities.
