Reasons Why You Could Suddenly Start Following Trump on Instagram and Facebook

Many Instagram and Facebook users were surprised to find themselves suddenly following President Donald Trump and other White House figures on the social media apps the day after Joe Biden’s inauguration. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, explained that this was part of a regular process where White House social media accounts are handed over when a new president takes office. There were some bugs in the process that may have caused this transition to be confusing for users.

Meta and other social media companies have been managing the transition of presidential accounts between administrations for years. When President Trump took office in 2017, followers of President Obama’s accounts were automatically switched over. The same process occurred when Joe Biden took office in 2021. Some users claimed they had never followed presidential accounts before and were unsure why they were following President Trump now. Meta, however, explained that users were not forced to follow these accounts and that it could take some time for follow and unfollow requests to go through during the transition.

Additionally, some users noticed that they were unable to search for posts with the hashtag “#democrats” on Meta’s apps, leading to accusations of censoring Democrats. Meta clarified that this was an error and they were working to fix it quickly. The confusion surrounding the transition of presidential accounts and the errors in the social media platforms have caused some users to question the handling of political content on these apps.
