After leading the Colorado School of Mines football team for two seasons, head coach Pete Sterbick has announced his resignation. Sterbick is moving on to become the offensive coordinator at Montana State, leaving behind a successful tenure with the Orediggers. During his time as head coach, Sterbick achieved a record of 22-4 and took the team to the Division II national championship game in 2023. He was recognized as the AFCA Regional Head Coach of the Year and NFFCC Colorado Coach of the Year in the same year.
Sterbick’s departure has prompted the search for a new head coach at Colorado School of Mines, with special teams coordinator and running backs coach Yon Boon stepping in as the interim head coach. The team finished with an 8-3 record in the last season, falling short of the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in a non-pandemic year since 2017.
Director of Athletics David Hansburg expressed gratitude for Sterbick’s contributions to Mines Football and emphasized the rich tradition and culture within the program that each coach and player has contributed to over the years. Sterbick also shared his appreciation for his time at Mines and expressed confidence in the team’s future under new leadership. This marks the second time in three years that the Orediggers have undergone a coaching search, highlighting the program’s commitment to finding the right leader to continue their success on the field.
