Jeffco Board of Education Boosts Safety Amid Criminal Investigation
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — In response to an ongoing criminal investigation involving former Chief of Schools David Weiss, the Jeffco Board of Education is enhancing safety measures across local schools. Board member Mary Parker addressed the community in a letter, assuring residents that their concerns are acknowledged, and confirmed that the investigation currently focuses on Weiss alone, with no evidence linking him to any Jeffco personnel.
Weiss was terminated in December after being accused of possessing child sexual abuse material. Tragically, he was found deceased in Maryland in early January, with authorities speculating he took his own life without any signs of foul play. The Board of Education met publicly on January 7 to discuss the incident, emphasizing their commitment to child safety and collaboration with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Acknowledging the community’s frustration with the duration of the investigation, Parker stated that updates will be provided as they become available. The Board is committed to intensifying existing safety protocols and consulting child safety experts.
Superintendent Tracy Dorland, in a separate letter dated January 17, outlined the district’s strategies for staff vetting and detailed upcoming safety projects. These include implementing a district-wide visitor management system, forming a Safety Advisory Council, hosting a Safe Student Summit, partnering with the Colorado School Resource Safety Center for expanded training, and enhancing technology tools for improved student safety.
A Jeffco Board meeting is scheduled for February 13, where a comprehensive update will be presented. Following this meeting, a new "Safety and Security" section will launch on the district’s website, allowing the public to track progress on these vital initiatives. Parker concluded by highlighting the community’s essential role in safeguarding the students of Jeffco.
