A delegation of Douglas County officials recently traveled to Washington, D.C. in time for President Donald Trump’s inauguration to lay the groundwork for cooperation with the new administration. Despite being from a “red county in a blue state,” the officials, including Commissioners Kevin Van Winkle, Abe Laydon, and George Teal, Sheriff Darren Weekly, and District Attorney George Brauchler, met with senators and representatives to discuss various issues such as wildfire mitigation, public safety, and space command. They emphasized the importance of building relationships with federal counterparts to secure funding and policy implementation for Douglas County.
The trip’s cost will be disclosed upon the officials’ return, as they discussed illegal immigration and the impact of state “sanctuary” policies on the county during their time in D.C. They are considering partnerships with the federal government to address immigration-related issues and support legal immigration while cracking down on illegal immigration to protect legal immigrants.
In addition, District Attorney Brauchler has been working with federal agencies like the FBI, DEA, and ATF to enhance local resources, with a focus on obtaining funding for staffing positions and technological infrastructure within the 23rd district. Sheriff Weekly highlighted the county’s efforts to push for jail time for low-level crimes, aligning with Brauchler’s focus on promoting public safety in the new judicial district covering Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln counties. The officials aim to promote cooperation and effective governance between Douglas County and the federal government.
