Girl Scouts of Colorado Launches Innovative AI Patch Program with Microsoft in Denver
DENVER — A groundbreaking program aimed at exploring artificial intelligence (AI) debuted at the Girl Scout Dream Lab as troops from across Colorado gathered on Monday. This initiative, a collaborative effort between Girl Scouts of Colorado and Microsoft, introduced participants to the world of AI through the use of Microsoft Copilot.
In this unique patch program, girls were tasked with envisioning and designing their own restaurants using AI tools. As they articulated their concepts, the software generated accompanying images and ideas, sparking creativity and innovation among the participants. "This collaboration marks the first time in the U.S. that Microsoft and Girl Scouts have partnered to create an AI learning program. The girls are experiencing how to leverage AI as a design tool while also understanding its limitations and the importance of human insight," stated Breann Grell, director of corporate programs for Girl Scouts of Colorado.
Sixth grader Izabella Alvarado, who joined the Girl Scouts in 2019, expressed her enthusiasm for the program, saying, "I can do many things with it. If I want to be really creative, I can think of many things I want to do." At the conclusion of the event, participants received a new badge for their vests, celebrating their achievements in AI exploration.
Grell emphasized the goal of the program as groundwork for future leaders. "We want to equip our next generation with opportunities and skills not only to thrive in school but also to grow and adapt in a rapidly changing world," she explained. Feedback from participants will help shape an activity guide for broader use among Girl Scouts.
