Xcel Energy Clarifies “Confusing” Communication Regarding Water Heater Temperature Settings

Xcel Energy Clarifies Water Heater Temperature Recommendations Amid Confusion

Denver, CO – Xcel Energy issued a clarification on Monday regarding its recent energy-saving advice concerning water heater temperatures. As Colorado braces for arctic temperatures, the company had suggested lowering the temperature on water heaters, a recommendation that quickly drew scrutiny due to health concerns.

On January 17, Xcel Energy recommended homeowners lower their water heater settings to save on energy costs. The advisory noted that setting the temperature at 120 degrees Fahrenheit is optimal, and that lowering it by 10 degrees could lead to a 3-5% reduction in water heating expenses. However, this recommendation conflicted with guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which advises against setting water heaters below 120 degrees to prevent the growth of Legionella bacteria. Legionnaires’ disease, caused by this bacteria, poses serious health risks, with a notable mortality rate.

Tyler Bryant of Xcel Energy addressed the issue, stating, "We are not advising customers to lower their water heater below 120 degrees F." He emphasized that the 3-5% cost savings was intended for consumers who typically operate their water heaters at higher temperatures. Acknowledging the potential for misunderstanding, Bryant assured that future energy-saving tips would be communicated more clearly.

In light of the confusion, consumers are urged to maintain water heater settings at or above 120 degrees to ensure both energy efficiency and safety. Xcel Energy aims to provide clearer guidance moving forward, ensuring that customers can effectively manage their energy use without compromising health standards.
