Denver Rescue Mission Sees Surge in Services Amid Arctic Blast

Denver’s Shelters Take Action Amid Arctic Blast

DENVER — With an Arctic blast gripping Colorado, metro area shelters are stepping up to provide essential support for the homeless and those in need. The Denver Department of Housing Stability (HOST) is collaborating with city agencies to establish "front door" referral centers, which offer extended hours and direct access to shelter options.

At the Denver Rescue Mission’s Lawrence Street Community Center, Tracy Brooks, Chief Program Officer, emphasized the importance of assessing individuals’ needs and facilitating their transfer to appropriate shelters. “We want people indoors and safe. Our outreach workers are actively identifying those in need, and the Denver Police Department is coordinating with us to bring individuals to safety,” Brooks stated.

Cory Branch, program manager for HOST’s street outreach team, noted that their mission involves actively reaching out to those experiencing homelessness and providing them with transportation to shelters or essential supplies for warmth. “We have teams with vehicles, including wheelchair-accessible vans, ensuring everyone can access our services,” Branch said.

As demand increases dramatically during this frigid weather, the Denver Rescue Mission is urging for donations of winter gear, food, and financial support. Brooks explained, “Our resources are stretched thin during extreme weather events, necessitating more staff and supplies to meet the urgent needs.”

The outreach teams have observed a positive trend, with fewer people remaining on the streets as they access warming centers. Branch highlighted the importance of connecting with those still vulnerable to the cold. “Every bit of help goes a long way in ensuring our community stays safe,” he added.

For those looking to assist, information on how to contribute to the Denver Rescue Mission can be found online. As community initiatives intensify, Denver continues its commitment to supporting its most vulnerable citizens during this severe weather crisis.
