Tragic Vigil Held for Stabbing Victim Nicholas ‘Trip’ Burkett on 16th Street Mall
In a poignant display of love and remembrance, family and friends gathered on the 16th Street Mall to honor Nicholas "Trip" Burkett, a 34-year-old man fatally stabbed during a violent incident on January 11-12. Burkett was one of four victims targeted by 24-year-old Elijah Caudill, who was arrested shortly after the attacks.
With light snow falling, Burkett’s family placed flowers at the intersection of 16th and Wazee streets, near the site of the attack. His father, Wayne Burkett, described the experience as "surreal and tough," while sister Maxine recalled her brother’s vibrant spirit and expressive nature.
Burkett, who had faced challenges with mental health and addiction and was homeless at the time, was remembered for his love of music and art. His family reflected on the tragedy, noting that both he and the suspect shared similar struggles, highlighting the urgent need for resources to address homelessness and mental health issues in the community.
The series of stabbings began with a 49-year-old man attacked on January 11, followed by the death of 71-year-old Celinda Levno, an American Airlines flight attendant. Burkett was the last of the four victims, stabbed in the back and later dying at Denver Health Medical Center.
As officials investigate the circumstances surrounding the violence, the Burkett family expresses their heartbreak and anxiety over the safety of the community. “We’re all in this together,” Maxine said, emphasizing the necessity for action on homelessness and mental illness. The tragic events have raised awareness of the growing crisis, with a notable increase in homelessness reported in the Denver area.
The Burkett family’s loss serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within the community, urging a collective effort to ensure safety and support for all residents.
