Iowa Senator suggests legislation allowing state to acquire 9 counties in Minnesota

Republican Senator Mike Bousselot from Iowa introduced a bill at the Land Investment Expo that would allow Iowa to purchase nine southern Minnesota counties. The bill aims to “make Minnesota Iowa again” by offering former Minnesota residents lower taxes and a more farm-friendly state. Bousselot’s proposal has support from colleagues in the Iowa House and Senate, although the text of the bill was not available at the time. The idea was in the works before President Trump’s similar suggestion of acquiring Greenland and Canada.

Bousselot believes that the purchase would benefit both states, with Iowa’s budget surplus being used to address Minnesota’s budget deficit. He also highlighted the conservative politics of the counties in Minnesota’s southern region as a reason for the potential success of the purchase. However, according to the U.S. Constitution, states cannot buy other states or their counties without consent from Congress and the existing states involved.

Despite legal limitations, Bousselot remains committed to the idea as a way to “grow Iowa” and attract agricultural investments. He anticipates that around 180,000 people from the nine counties would become Iowans, providing a boost to his state while not impacting the electoral balance. The proposal aims to address the budgetary needs of Minnesota while aligning with Iowa’s political sensibilities. Nevertheless, the constitutional constraints mean that such a purchase would require significant changes to the federal system.
