Gaza anxiously anticipates ceasefire as bombings persist: ‘We have suffered so much’ | Latest updates on Israel-Palestine conflict

The residents of Deir el-Balah in the Gaza Strip are cautiously optimistic following the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. On Thursday, the sound of renewed bombing added fear to their joy, as they reflected on the 15-month war that has killed thousands of Palestinians and left many more missing. Displaced from their homes by Israeli attacks and orders, many are struggling to survive and coping with the trauma of losing loved ones.

Psychiatrist Nahed al-Wer, who works at a clinic in Deir el-Balah, highlighted the psychological toll of the war, expressing concerns about escalations in violence and the need for mental health treatment for those affected. Mother of one, Yasmeen al-Helo, shared her mixed emotions of joy over the ceasefire and sadness for the loss of cherished individuals. Mohammed al-Mudawwi, a victim of Israeli detention and mistreatment, expressed hope for medical treatment abroad now that the ceasefire is in place. Journalist Saleh Aljafarawi, who documented the war, described the lasting impact of the conflict on his life and the need to rebuild after the destruction.

As the community awaits the implementation of the ceasefire on Sunday, there remains a sense of apprehension about the future. The memories of the war linger, and the residents of Deir el-Balah remain hopeful that peace will prevail in the long run. Their resilience in the face of uncertainty reflects the determination of the Palestinian people to rebuild and move forward after the devastating conflict.
