Former First Lady Michelle Obama has announced that she will not be attending the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, breaking with the tradition of former presidents and their families attending inaugurations. Trump himself broke tradition by skipping President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021 following the Capitol riot on Jan. 6. However, the three living former presidents who are not set to be sworn in on Jan. 20 will attend the inauguration, as well as President Biden who will be leaving office.
President Joe Biden has confirmed that he will be attending the inauguration, stating that he is the only president ever to avoid an inauguration. Former President Barack Obama is also set to attend the inauguration, while his wife Michelle Obama will not be in attendance. George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush have confirmed that they will be attending the inauguration as well. The Associated Press reported that Bill and Hillary Clinton will also attend the inauguration, although the Clinton Foundation did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.
Despite some former leaders not attending, the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump will still be attended by a mix of current and former political figures, continuing the tradition of presidential inaugurations as a symbol of the peaceful transition of power in the United States.
