The National Western Scholarship Trust honored Sharon Magness Blake as the 2025 Citizen of the West at a gala dinner on Monday, raising an impressive $647,000 to support scholarships. Magness Blake, a renowned philanthropist and equine enthusiast, is celebrated for her immense contributions to various organizations, having raised over $100 million throughout her career.

Her signature event, Western Fantasy, co-founded with Jean Galloway, has been a cornerstone for Volunteers of America (VOA) in Colorado, generating $35 million over its 30-year span to aid the hungry and provide emergency shelter. VOA’s former chief executive, Dianna Kunz, led the invocation, showing deep appreciation for Magness Blake’s dedication.

Continuing a cherished tradition, Magness Blake made a special entrance on Thunder, her famous Arabian horse, amidst a backdrop of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.” This poignant moment marked her resilience, as she is recovering from recent back surgery.

The event attracted nearly 1,000 guests, including Colorado Governor Jared Polis, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon, and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, who reminisced about the joy of watching Thunder at Broncos games. A heartfelt video tribute featured friends like Garth Brooks, who praised Magness Blake as an exemplary figure of the West.

In her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude for her health and connection to the National Western Stock Show, a place she had cherished since first attending 38 years ago. Magness Blake, a trustee of the show, emphasized her humble origins and passion for philanthropy.

Capital campaign chair Pete Coors lauded her spirit, emphasizing the vitality she brings to the community. The evening celebrated not only her life but the profound impact of giving back to those in need, highlighting her as a beacon of hope and generosity in Colorado.
