Several Paris Olympics athletes request replacement medals due to deterioration

The French Mint has announced that it will be replacing a number of medals from the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics after athletes complained about the medals deteriorating. Some athletes took to social media to share pictures of their damaged medals, with concerns about their quality emerging even before the Games ended. The Monnaie de Paris, which produced 5,084 medals, stated that it takes the issue of damaged medals seriously and has optimized its varnishing process to prevent further deterioration. The medals were designed by Parisian jewelry house Chaumet and contained a piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower. Athletes like American skateboarder Nyjah Huston and French swimmers Yohann Ndoye-Brouard and Clément Secchi raised concerns about the medals’ condition. The International Olympic Committee confirmed that the replacement process will begin soon and that damaged medals will be replaced with identical engravings. The iron pieces in the medals were taken from parts of the Eiffel Tower during renovations. Paris organizers are working with the French mint to understand the cause of the damage. Athletes who have received damaged medals are encouraged to contact their national Olympic committees for replacements.
