Firefighters in Los Angeles County are still battling two large wildfires as residents remain on high alert for strong Santa Ana winds. The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for particularly dangerous conditions in the area. While progress has been made in containing the blazes, authorities are still warning residents to be prepared for a fast-moving fire. Thousands of residents remain under evacuation orders and warnings.
The Palisades Fire has burned 23,713 acres and is 18% contained, while the Eaton Fire has burned 14,117 acres and is 35% contained. The Auto Fire in Ventura County is 47% contained after burning 61 acres. At least 25 people have been killed in the wildfires, with search and rescue operations ongoing for missing victims. Families are mourning the loss of loved ones in the fires.
Some residents, like partners Robert Bullock and David Anderson, have chosen to stay in their homes despite evacuation orders. They cannot leave their block due to a 24-hour curfew imposed by authorities. Many of their neighbors are also unable to return due to the curfew. Police cars and armed National Guard personnel are enforcing the curfew and only allowing authorized vehicles through. The situation remains dangerous as firefighters, residents, and authorities continue to monitor the wildfires and the potential for further spread with the return of strong winds.
