Government shifts focus back to legislative bills for 2025 session

The 2024 legislative session in Colorado ended with some unfinished business, prompting several lawmakers to reintroduce bills that did not pass the previous year. Among these bills is House Bill 1040, which seeks to add nuclear energy to the state’s definition of clean energy resources, with a new exemption for public utilities. Senate Bill 039, which failed in 2024, is also being reintroduced with changes. Another bill, Senate Bill 048, aims to require insurance providers to cover obesity and pre-diabetes treatments.

Additionally, Senate Bill 045, which would charge the Colorado School of Public Health with analyzing draft legislation for a single-payer health care system, is being brought back for the third year in a row. The bill aims to implement a universal health care payment system in Colorado. Another bill, House Bill 1031, focuses on allowing law enforcement officers to file civil lawsuits if they face retaliation for reporting misconduct by their colleagues.

Lastly, House Bill 1062, which deals with the theft of firearms, is being reincarnated from the previous session. The bill would make theft of a firearm a Class 6 felony, regardless of its value. These bills are part of the ongoing efforts by lawmakers to address important issues in the state and bring about meaningful change.
