South Korean authorities have arrested impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on charges of insurrection related to his declaration of martial law on Dec. 3. Yoon submitted himself for questioning to prevent violence, as police prepared to arrest him at his residence. Yoon’s lawyers argue that the arrest is illegal and intended to humiliate him. This is the first warrant issued against an incumbent South Korean president. Some scuffles broke out between pro-Yoon protesters and police as news of his imminent detention spread. Yoon’s martial law declaration shocked South Koreans and led to his impeachment and removal from office on Dec. 14. The Constitutional Court is currently considering whether to uphold the impeachment and permanently remove him from power. Yoon had been staying in a heavily guarded hillside residence, surrounded by barbed wire, until his arrest.
