Colorado Backcountry Skier Who Perished in Avalanche Previously Served on Ouray Mountain Rescue Team

Press Release: Colorado Backcountry Avalanche Claims Life of Experienced Skier

In a tragic incident, an experienced backcountry skier and former member of the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team, Donald Moden Jr., was killed in an avalanche while skiing solo in Colorado’s backcountry. Moden, aged 57, perished on January 7 while navigating Red Mountain Number 3 near Red Mountain Pass, marking the state’s first avalanche fatality this winter.

Moden’s absence during a scheduled check-in prompted his wife to contact local authorities, leading her to discover the avalanche site herself. She located her husband unresponsive in the popular skiing vicinity known as Bollywood. Reports indicate that Moden was buried beneath three feet of snow, a depth that hindered any chances of self-rescue.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center confirmed that at the time of the incident, Moden was equipped with both an avalanche rescue transceiver and an avalanche airbag backpack, which unfortunately had not been deployed. This event has cast a spotlight on the ongoing dangers present in Colorado’s backcountry skiing conditions, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and caution among winter sport enthusiasts.

As the winter season progresses, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center urges skiers and snowboarders to stay informed about current avalanche conditions and to be prepared for hazards while exploring the backcountry. The tragic loss of Donald Moden Jr. serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with backcountry skiing in Colorado’s mountainous terrain.
