Changing Downtown’s Image Will Take Time After Recent Stabbings

Press Release: Downtown Denver Faces Challenges Following Stabbings

DENVER — The Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP) is working to promote the vibrancy of the city center, but recent violent incidents pose significant challenges. Over the weekend, three individuals were stabbed along the 16th Street Mall, with a fourth stabbing near Union Station, resulting in two fatalities. The suspect, 24-year-old Elijah Caudill, was arrested after the incidents.

Kourtny Garrett, president and CEO of the DDP, expressed concern about the community’s sense of safety following these events. “We all feel very vulnerable. This tragedy will reverberate, and it will take time to rebuild confidence in downtown,” she stated. Despite substantial city investments in the area and reassurances from Mayor Mike Johnston regarding rising business activities and decreasing crime rates, perceptions of downtown safety remain troubling.

As DDP looks toward a hopeful 2025 with anticipated improvements to the 16th Street Mall, Garrett emphasized the need to enhance security measures. The DDP already provides private security patrols, complemented by increased Denver Police Department visibility in the area. However, public concerns have arisen about the adequacy of police presence, particularly from visitors unaware of the violent incidents.

Robin Randol, a visitor from Phoenix, described feeling unsafe due to the lack of police notifications and presence. Other tourists, like Brent Hase from Wisconsin, were surprised to learn about the stabbings only after conversing with locals but remain enthusiastic about returning to Denver.

City advocates remain hopeful as they navigate this challenging time, focusing on enhancing safety and maintaining downtown’s appeal to visitors and residents alike.
