Arvada Settles Lawsuit for $2M Following Police Officer’s Fatal Shooting of Pregnant Woman

Press Release: City of Arvada Settles Wrongful Death Lawsuit in Police Shooting Case

Arvada, CO – The City of Arvada has agreed to a $2 million settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the 2021 police shooting of Destinee Thompson, a pregnant woman. The settlement, finalized in July 2023, follows the tragic incident where the 27-year-old mother of three was killed by police officers who mistakenly identified her as an armed shoplifting suspect.

On August 17, 2021, officers responded to a reported incident of shoplifting and subsequently shot Thompson while she attempted to drive away. The gunfire resulted in the death of Thompson and her unborn son. The lawsuit was filed by her surviving family members in 2023, seeking justice for the loss of their loved ones.

Arvada police spokesperson Detective David Snelling confirmed the settlement’s confirmation through court records, stating, "This matter was settled some time ago, but due to complexities related to Ms. Thompson’s estate, this case was recently finalized in the courts." The investigation led by First Judicial District Attorney Alexis King concluded that the officer’s actions were lawful, and no criminal charges were filed against the involved officer.

The tragic case highlights ongoing concerns regarding police conduct and the use of force, particularly involving vulnerable individuals. As the community grapples with the ramifications of this event, the substantial settlement underscores the city’s acknowledgment of the profound impact the incident had on Thompson’s family and the broader community.

Further updates and details are anticipated as the city continues to navigate the aftermath of this incident and reflects on policing practices moving forward.
