TikTok denies rumors of possible sale to Elon Musk as ‘pure fiction’

Chinese video-sharing platform TikTok has denied reports claiming that the Chinese government is considering selling the platform to tech billionaire Elon Musk to avoid a ban in the United States. The report, which came from Bloomberg News, stated that Chinese officials were in talks about a potential sale to Musk’s social media platform, X, to avoid a ban that was scheduled to take effect if ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based owner, did not sell off its US operations by January 19.

TikTok dismissed the report as “pure fiction” and did not immediately respond to further requests for comment. The US Supreme Court is currently considering the constitutionality of the looming ban after TikTok filed a legal challenge against the related Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. During oral arguments, the court appeared to lean towards upholding the ban, with concerns about national security risks and the protection of Americans’ personal data.

President-elect Joe Biden signed the TikTok bill in April, amidst worries from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers about the app being used to manipulate public discourse. Outgoing President Donald Trump, who initially tried to ban the app during his first term, has now pledged to “save” the platform. Musk, the world’s richest person, has not publicly commented on any potential acquisition of TikTok.
