Special Counsel’s Final Report Indicates Trump Would Have Been Convicted for Election Interference Had He Not Won

Press Article: Release of Jack Smith’s Report on Trump Investigation Sparks Controversy

In a pivotal development, Attorney General Merrick Garland has unveiled part one of former special counsel Jack Smith’s report into President-elect Donald Trump’s alleged misconduct related to the 2020 election. The report, which became public after a court order expired, details evidence suggesting sufficient grounds for prosecution if not for Trump’s imminent return to office.

Smith’s report emphasizes that his office’s pursuit of charges was based on "admissible evidence," and includes claims that Trump made knowingly false accusations regarding election fraud. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon recently dismissed efforts to keep the report under wraps, paving the way for its release. This first volume addresses Trump’s purported attempts to undermine the transfer of power following the 2020 election, while a second volume is expected to examine his handling of classified documents.

Smith refuted claims from Trump that the investigation was politically motivated, characterizing such assertions as "laughable." He noted that despite the considerable unrest incurred during the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, direct evidence of Trump’s intent to instigate violence was not fully established. However, Smith argued that Trump’s actions merited serious consideration for charges, asserting that he bore significant responsibility for the events of that day.

In response, Trump criticized Smith on social media, dismissing him as a "lamebrain prosecutor" and calling the findings "Fake." Following his indictment in August 2023 on four counts, Trump pleaded not guilty, maintaining that the investigation was part of a politically charged effort against him.

As Smith’s investigations conclude, the future of Trump’s legal turmoil remains uncertain, especially with ongoing investigations into related co-conspirators. The second volume of Smith’s report, yet to be disclosed, could bring further revelations.
