Johnson’s Corner Closes, to Reopen as Black Bear Diner

Northern Colorado — After serving travelers for over six decades, the iconic Johnson’s Corner Restaurant and Bakery has closed its doors, effective Sunday. Signs posted on the entrance inform patrons that while the restaurant is closed, baked goods will still be available at the adjoining convenience store. The establishment will soon undergo renovations to transform into a Black Bear Diner, a popular chain with three other locations in Colorado.

Travel Centers of America, which owns the Petro Johnson’s Corner truck stop, confirmed that the truck stop and convenience store will continue to operate during the renovations. The chain has not provided further comments regarding the closure.

Johnson’s Corner opened in 1952 and gained notable fame for its delicious cinnamon rolls. In 2014, it became part of the Travel Centers of America Petro network. Its closure follows the recent opening of Texas-based Buc-ee’s, which debuted a massive 74,000-square-foot travel center just three miles away, featuring 116 fueling stations and an extensive selection of food options. The competition has sparked discussions in the community, with Buc-ee’s reportedly looking at potential expansion near Larkspur and Monument.

Local officials and residents have expressed concerns over this potential additional store, indicating the growing competition in the area. The planned transition of Johnson’s Corner into a Black Bear Diner aims to reposition the establishment amidst these changing dynamics.

As Johnson’s Corner prepares for its new identity, it will mark the end of an era for a beloved roadside stop. For updates on this evolving story and more local news, visit 9NEWS.com.
