FBI investigates drone collision with firefighting aircraft during LA fire

The FBI is seeking information about the collision of an unauthorized drone with a firefighting aircraft over the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles County. The incident occurred last week while the aircraft was operating near Malibu, California, and resulted in a 3-by-6-inch hole in the left wing of the aircraft. The FBI has opened a tipline to help identify the drone operator, and the incident is under investigation by the FBI and FAA.

No injuries were reported in the incident, but the aircraft was grounded for five days, affecting firefighting efforts in the area. The aircraft is expected to return to action pending approval by the FAA. The FAA has enacted temporary flight restrictions in the area to protect firefighting aircraft, and flying a drone near a wildfire is considered a federal crime with serious penalties.

Authorities have arrested three people in connection with drone incidents over the wildfires, and there have been at least 40 incidents involving unauthorized drones disrupting firefighting operations. The FAA emphasizes the dangers of flying drones near wildfires, as it can delay airborne response and pose a threat to firefighters, residents, and nearby communities. Interfering with firefighting operations can result in criminal charges and civil penalties. The FAA urges the public to comply with temporary flight restrictions and report any unauthorized drone activity.
