Eastbound I-70 at Vail Pass in Colorado Closed for Minimum 6 Hours Due to Semi Truck Accident Recovery

Eastbound Lanes of Vail Pass Closed for Semi-Truck Wreckage Recovery

VAIL, CO – In a significant traffic disruption, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) shut down all eastbound lanes of Vail Pass on Tuesday morning. The closure, effective from 9 a.m., is necessary to facilitate the recovery of wreckage from a semi-truck accident that occurred last week on January 8. This incident, involving two semi-trucks, led to a spill of diesel fuel, complicating the cleanup and recovery efforts.

CDOT has announced that the closures at East Vail, Exit 180, are anticipated to last until at least 3 p.m. Crews are actively working to remove the debris and restore traffic flow. Motorists should plan for significant delays, as CDOT estimates that travel times will increase by approximately 90 minutes for those detoured around the area.

Drivers are being rerouted off Interstate 70 at East Vail and directed east on U.S. Route 24 toward Leadville. From there, they will take Colorado Highway 91 north to rejoin I-70 at Copper Mountain. CDOT urges travelers to exercise caution and patience while navigating the detour.

The agency is dedicated to clearing the site as quickly and safely as possible while ensuring the wellbeing of both workers and travelers. Updates on the situation will be provided as recovery efforts progress.

Residents and travelers alike are advised to check for any potential changes to the closure timeframe or further instructions as the recovery operation unfolds.

For those in the area, maintaining awareness of conditions and alternate routes is essential to avoid extended travel delays.
