Record Crowd Attends Professional Women’s Hockey League Game in Denver
DENVER, Jan. 12, 2025—A stunning crowd of 14,018 fans packed Denver’s Ball Arena on Sunday for the third game of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) Takeover Tour, setting a new U.S. attendance record for a professional women’s hockey game. The electrifying matchup featured the Minnesota Frost facing off against the Montréal Victoire, and it eclipsed the previous record of 13,736 set last season.
"This is what we’ve been working for," said Cayla Barnes, a defender for the Montréal Victoire, highlighting the rising enthusiasm for women’s hockey. “The product we put out on the ice is what fans love to see, and we wouldn’t be here without them.”
Players and coaches emphasized the importance of role models for young girls. Minnesota Frost goaltender Maddie Rooney remarked, “For those girls to be able to watch the PWHL now is really cool,” acknowledging the significance of having accessible role models in the sport.
The atmosphere in the arena was electric, with palpable excitement from the fans. Minnesota Frost coach Ken Klee praised the event, stating, "To showcase these ladies and their talent, that’s what it’s all about."
The PWHL, rebranded in 2023, is experiencing significant growth, with plans to expand from six to eight teams by the 2025-26 season. As Denver has recently been awarded an NWSL franchise, the momentum for women’s sports in the city continues to build.
Given the remarkable turnout and enthusiasm, fans are hopeful for a professional women’s hockey team in Denver. "We want a team," echoed various supporters, signaling strong community support for the future of women’s hockey.
