Beloved illustrator Charles Santore passed away in 2019 leaving behind an unfinished children’s book, “The Scroobious Pip”. His son, Nicky, who had drifted away from visual art in recent years, was asked to complete the illustrations. Initially hesitant due to familial and artistic differences, Nicky eventually took on the task, spending years honing his craft and working to finish the book in his father’s studio.
Despite technical and philosophical disparities between their art, Nicky managed to complete the illustrations for “The Scroobious Pip” by 2023. The artwork was praised for its detail and beauty, showing a seamless blend of both Charlie and Nicky’s styles. As Nicky continues to work on his own paintings and another children’s book inspired by MacBeth, he reflects on the lessons learned from finishing his father’s final project.
The completion of “The Scroobious Pip” serves as a testament to the bond between father and son, showcasing a shared love of art and a dedication to honoring Charlie’s legacy. Nicky’s journey from hesitant artist to confident illustrator is a testament to his growth and determination to find his own voice in the art world, while still carrying on the family tradition of creativity and excellence.
