A recent article published in the Ouray County Plaindealer detailed an alleged rape that occurred at the home of the Colorado police chief, involving his stepson and two others. The newspaper reported that the physical copies of the edition containing the story were stolen out of racks, preventing locals from purchasing the paper. The initial case report was taken by the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office and was later referred to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The police chief declined to comment on the allegations made in the story. The paper’s co-publisher, Erin McIntyre, expressed apologies for the theft of the newspapers and emphasized the importance of the freedom of the press and the community’s right to information. The Plaindealer encouraged anyone with information about the theft to contact the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office. Despite the incident, the paper stated they would continue their reporting and update readers when the newspapers would be available for distribution. The statement also highlighted that the community’s resilience and their commitment to informing the public remained strong. CBS News has attempted to reach Police Chief Jeff Wood for comment but has not received a response.
